The View from the Dean’s Office

Leading the college has shifted my vision dramatically. I hope this issue of the newsletter begins to push the edges of your vision of the College of Nursing. We are … doing very good work. We are … changing lives. We are … serving the profession by educating the nurse clinicians and scholars of tomorrow. Your loyalty and continued support is making a difference.

Alumni Spotlight: Bianca de Leon

At age 5, Bianca de Leon emigrated from the Philippines with her family in search of a better life. But that life wasn’t easy. Thanks to perseverance and a strong support system, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing and graduated in 2017 with a commission in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.

Student Spotlight: Rita Concannon

Rita Concannon, an Army ROTC cadet, arrived at Penn State in fall 2014. Within her first week, she met Christin Folwarczny, a junior Nursing student who would help her make the transition into college and military life.

“One of the benefits of ROTC is they pair freshmen with upperclass students for a mentoring relationship,” Rita said. “We had dinner together that first week. She showed me how to fill out my 104R (academic course planner for ROTC) and other paperwork. She looked at my schedule and we developed a study plan together.”
