“Dysphagia in Community Dwelling Older Adults”
February 13, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Aarthi Madhavan, PHD, CCC-SLP, Assistant Professor, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders
Dr. Madhavan’s research interests lie in attempting to mitigate the negative health consequences of dysphagia (swallowing disorders) in older adults. In working toward this goal, her lab focuses on improving assessment and screening of dysphagia in the elderly population; specifically, in developing a screening tool for the early identification of swallowing difficulties in the community dwelling elderly population. This research involves close collaborations with clinicians and researchers in the fields of aging, nutrition, cognition, neuromotor abilities, and questionnaire and tool development.
The presentation will describe dysphagia in older adults and present a novel framework for how we need to look at dysphagia in ‘healthy’ community dwelling older adults. Current and future research directions in this area will be presented
