Undergraduate Student Service Award
Criteria
The student nurse supports the ideals of the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing and the nursing profession by engaging in service activities that support individuals, families, and/or communities and that encourage and foster the nurse’s personal and professional development.
Eligibility
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be a graduating senior (graduating May, August, or December of the calendar year in which the award is presented)
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Must be able to attend the Scholarship and Awards Luncheon in Spring 2020 (date tbd).
Nominating Procedure
Nominations may be made by peers, Penn State faculty, or Penn State Nursing alumni.
Selection
Nominations will be reviewed by each board member with each board member scoring each individual nomination for evidence of the award criteria – the highest scoring nomination will receive the award; decisions regarding scoring ties will be made by the Board.

Past Recipients
2007—Jennifer Leary (First year of award)
- As a student, Jen was a national spokeswoman with the American Cancer Society. In addition, she was involved with the Penn State student Relay for Life. She sat on the 2006 Homecoming Court and danced in THON in 2007. She also served as president of the University Park Student Nurses Association (SNAP).
2008—Lauren Thumm
- Lauren began service work as a freshman nursing student. She was involved in THON during all four years as a student and was active in other service activities such as the Second Mile Development Committee and Masonic Children’s Home. During her senior year she participated in health fairs, health trivia with seniors in State College, Relay for Life, and Breast Cancer Walk.
2009—Sara Ross
- As SNAP president during her senior year, Sara organized a Career Fair attended by fifty recruiters at the HUB, participated in the Freshmen Welcome Party, attended the State SNAP Convention in Harrisburg, organized stethoscope and School of Nursing clothing sales, and regularly participated in the Alumni Society monthly conference calls. She also helped to organize the School of Nursing Formal, the spring Nursing Convocation Ceremony, the Kaplan NCLEX Review, student attendance at the 45th School of Nursing Anniversary, and the National Student Nurse convention in Nashville, Tennessee.
2010—Toni Cella
- As SNAP president, Toni organized the Nursing Career Fair, served as a student representative on the B.S. Council, organized fundraisers for the South Africa Mission Project, and volunteered with THON, serving as lieutenant captain for the OPPerations committee in 2008.
2011—Jillian Moulton
- As SNAP president, Jillian led the organization in preparing care packages for the troops and completing a worldwide book drive, donating over 300 books to orphanages and churches around the world. She also was a THON dancer.
2012—Amanda Potts 2013—Staci Sable 2014—Maxine Parmer
- Under Maxine’s leadership, SNAP raised $130,000 for THON, $30,000 more than the previous year, and more than doubled the number of students attending the Pink Zone basketball game and pregame reception. She organized stethoscope and apparel fundraisers, planned a Nursing formal, and coordinated a faculty appreciation luncheon and a project to send holiday stockings to troops in Afghanistan.
2015—Megan Byerly
- Megan recruited students to attend the alumni Homecoming brunch and helped to send students to the SNAP state convention in Harrisburg and the NSNA convention in Phoenix, Arizona. For the first time, SNAP won the Blood Cup trophy from the Penn State Student Red Cross Club for their outstanding volunteer work during fall semester. She also led the chapter to participate in flu clinics and Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.
