Doerfler has been a nurse since 1987, and later became a nurse practitioner in 1996. His areas of clinical interest have included emergency nursing, infection control, HIV primary care medicine, pain management and substance abuse. His doctoral area of study was and continues to be psychoneuroimmunology and its implication for complementary and alternative medicine. Doerfler is board certified in homeopathic medicine, and has a private practice in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania where he specializes in integrative health care. His teaching interests and experiences include professional development, research, pharmacology, health assessment and physical examination, and geriatrics.
