Matter worked in healthcare administration for over 30 years. 15 of those years were as a chief nurse. She led her organization to the first Magnet designation and first re-designation. During that time she promoted shared governance. She took the organization from a dependence of agency nursing to no agency nurses through a systematic approach. This included international recruitment, local programs to increase the number of nurses at the bedside and focused on retention of the her current nurses. Mentoring of new nurse leaders has been a life long action of Matter.
Her clinical interests include women’s health, cardiac nursing and oncology nursing. During her time as a leader she worked in these areas as a leader as well as clinically. Her time in nursing leadership serves as her compass for her teaching. Matter brings to her coursework real life system leadership.
