Post-master's Certificate in Geriatric Nursing Education
In cooperation with the Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, the Penn State School of Nursing is now pleased to offer a fully online Post-Master's Certificate in Geriatric Nursing Education.
The primary goal of this program is to prepare individuals with a current master's degree in nursing to teach geriatric nursing – both at the associate and baccalaureate degree levels – with a high degree of competency.
In addition, because the program is interdisciplinary in orientation, it is open to licensed practitioners and educators from a variety of professional fields, such as speech pathology, psychology, social work, and others. The curriculum consists of four graduate-level courses (12 credits), all of which are delivered entirely online through Penn State World Campus using interactive distance technology. In cooperation with World Campus staff, we provide our certificate students with ready access to technology support and multiple online modalities as needed throughout their course of study.
The graduate certificate program in Geriatric Nursing Education includes two 3-credit courses of didactic content in gerontological health care (6 credits) and two 3-credit courses of didactic content in education (6 credits).
The two gerontology courses—one focusing on health assessment, the other on health intervention—have been developed by geriatric nursing faculty in the Hartford Center at Penn State’s School of Nursing.
- NURS 522 - Assessment of the Older Adult (3)
- NURS 523 - Nursing Interventions for Complex Problems of the Older Adult (3)
To be awarded the graduate certificate in Geriatric Nursing Education, students must successfully complete both gerontology courses, along with ADTED 460 (Introduction to Adult Education) and one of the following two College of Education course options:
ADTED 506 - Program Planning in Adult Education
ADTED 507 - Research and Evaluation in Adult Education
The certificate program is a great way to get to know Hartford Center faculty and, if you are considering post-master's education, allows you to explore graduate-level studies at Penn State as a nondegree student.
