In 2012, the center received its first major philanthropic endowment from Dr. David Maneval, a retired professor of mineral engineering at Penn State and the University of Alaska. The Maneval Family Fund is being given in memory of Dr. Maneval’s late wife, Lyne, a longtime nurse at Penn State’s student health center. Dr. Maneval’s commitment to the Geriatric Center will support expanded alternatives in continuing education, including more accessible web-based delivery options for our live continuing education programs.
You, too, can help the Geriatric Center at Penn State address the critical shortage of nursing leaders in gerontology education and research. As America ages, nurses will play a crucial role, ensuring that America’s health care system can respond to the diverse needs of a record 70 million older adults by the year 2030.
Supporting the Geriatric Center helps to educate geriatric nursing faculty today – so they can prepare the next generation of nurses with high levels of geriatric competence tomorrow. This, in turn, will help create a dramatic change in the quality of health care for older adults across America – in hospitals, emergency rooms, doctors’ offices, and in rehabilitation and long-term care facilities.
To learn more, view the 2012 Annual Report of the John A. Hartford Foundation featuring our center director, Ann Kolanowski, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, along with seventeen other nursing leaders who, together, are preparing geriatric-expert nursing faculty for today—and geriatric-expert nurse leaders for tomorrow.
